Big Homework
The task is taken from the Abitur exams 2007 and the topic is, as so very often, the surveilance of the citizens by the state authorities. The Ministry for Culture and Education (Ministry of Truth, if ya know what I mean) probably thinks it has to boost political awareness. To put it short, here I go: (please don't blame, I know it sucks)
Composition
1. „Big Brother is watching us. " – Is our privacy endangered by permanent surveillance?
"Big Brother is watching you." This little phrase from the dystopian novel "1984" by George Orwell has long become the slogan of movements vowing for the private sphere to stay untouched by the attempts of governments to fight crime and terrorism. The argumentation is, that the executives in the western countries are giving themselves authorities, that allow them to spy on their citizens and take measures beyond the legal code.
In the past six years this tendency increased heavily due to the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001. In the US the patriot act was passed, that not only shortens civil rights, but forces people to reveal private details even if there is no criminal investigation intended, but just in case. In the United Kingdom, the fear of terrorism was used extensively to develop an area-wide monitoring-camera system all over the country.
Governments all over the world seem to have a mania towards security. So when they want to avert terrorism at any costs, they are ignoring the voices, that are complaining about the cut down on the private sphere of the citizen, that would rather know, that there is a small chance in dying from a bomb, than being watched nonstop.
In our modern times we really have to watch out, because by-and-by we will switch to storing all our personal information on digital data carrier that are a lot of more vulnerable then paper documents. Now already, especially young people, storm the Internet to fill hundreds of databases with a precise description of their lives and social ties. We have to gain awareness of us being much more responsible for our private sphere than most of us think. There is no use in complaining about cameras in a train station, as long as you keep strip your soul on YouTube.
Kind regards,
Dima

Hallo, lieber Leser! ;) Ich schau also mal.
